edit Movie Theater
In September of 1939, the Talon opened as a 560 seat movie theater owned by Smallville native William Talon. It had all the trappings of a classic movie house: royal red velour seats, moldings and wall sconces in the theaters, and plush couches and upholstered chairs in the lobby.
The marquee at the Talon

The Talon burned down in the Main Street fire of 1955. William Talon immediately made plans to rebuild and expand. On November 29, 1955, the Talon reopened as a 750-seat movie house. As part of the renovation, a neon sign was added that, letter-by-letter, spelled out the theater's name repeatedly. Gently curved staircases on each side of the theater led to a spacious balcony, where teenagers often hung out.

The Talon remained family-owned and operated until 2000. Its patronage fell over the years due to the proliferation of large-chain multiplex theaters and on February 26, 2000, the Talon Theater closed down.
edit Coffee Shop

In 2000, entrepreneur Nell Potter acquired the Talon Theater. Unable to find a new tenant to revive the old movie house, Potter sold the property in 2002 to local businessman Lex Luthor who planned to raze it and build a parking structure for the downtown area.

With the future of the old theater in danger, Nell Potter's niece and Smallville High School student Lana Lang swung into action. Her parents had met at the Talon, so the theater meant a lot to her. Lana lobbied Luthor to recognize the benefits of historical preservation, especially since it could be used as a tax write off. Impressed with Lang's conviction and ideas, Luthor scrapped his plans. With Nell as manager, Lana as assistant manager and Lex as a silent partner, the Talon opened in the spring of 2002.

Business at the Talon was initially very low, as local youth were more than happy hanging out at the Talon's coffee shop rival, the Beanery. Coupons and discounts did little to attract customers, so Lana moved quickly to secure the Talon's future. She discovered that the Beanery had had several health code violations, and passed along reports of the violations to the Smallville Ledger to be published in the newspaper. This ensured that the Talon would surpass the Beanery as Smallville's most popular after-school hangout.

After Nell moved to Metropolis, Lana actively managed the Talon while in high school. Clark Kent worked there briefly in the spring of 2003, but he left in the middle of a shift and Lana was forced to fire him. In spring of 2004, Lana decided to move to Paris, France, to study art and approached Lex about selling her shares. However, just before her departure, she learned that Lex intended to sell the Talon and turn it into a more lucrative business. She initially asked him to keep it the way it was, but then decided that she didn't want anything drawing her back to Smallville. She left town and Lex sold the Talon to a Mr. Kerns, who was going to covert it into a Burrito Ole. Mr. Kerns was killed by Emily Dinsmore and the coffee shop was closed down all summer without Lex reselling or renovating it.

By the fall of 2004, Martha Kent approached Lex. He agreed to let her manage the Talon and it was reopened. Lois Lane worked there as a waitress. Martha ran the Talon until the her husband Jonathan died suddenly. Martha quit when she decided to take her husband's seat in the Senate. Lois Lane began working there after she was expelled from college until getting a job working for Martha's Senate office.

Today, the Talon is the hippest coffeehouse and gathering place in Smallville. It features an Egyptian design motif and offers a full-service espresso bar and pastries. It has wireless Internet access, occasional live music, and karaoke. The theater is also still functioning, and shows classic movies.
edit Special Events

This list is incomplete. Please add any additional events.
The Talon has become a center for a variety of special events in the town.

* In 2002, Paul Chan's election victory was celebrated at the Talon. The Talon also hosted a "surprise" Welcome Back party for Ryan James.

* In 2003, a "Welcome Back" party was thrown for Whitney Fordman upon his apparent return from fighting in Indonesia.

* In 2004, the Smallville Crows football team held a victory party to celebrate advancing to the State Championship game.

* In 2006, Jonathan Kent's election party was held at the Talon.

* In 2007, the Talon hosted an elaborate Valentine's Day party. It also hosted the Miss Sweet Corn beauty pageant that fall that included a talent show.

* In 2008, the Talon hosted Chloe and Jimmy's engagement party.

edit Talon Apartment
Lana and Adam in the unrenovated Talon apartment.

In 2004, Lana met Adam Knight in physical therapy, and when he expressed that he had nowhere to live, she renovated the studio apartment above the Talon. Adam lived there until Lana discovered he was spying on her, and tried to have him evicted. She enlisted Lex Luthor's help, but before the two could act, he was taken away by Lionel Luthor and Dr. Lia Teng.

After Lana left to attend school in Paris, Lex decided to close down the Talon. However, Lana abruptly and urgently returned to Smallville three months later, and rented the apartment.

When Lana moved into the dorms at Metropolis University, Lois Lane rented the apartment. Although she no longer works as a waitress, she is still the Talon apartment's current tenant. As Jonathan Kent's campaign manager, Lois hosted his election victory party at the Talon in January 2006.

The events of Dark Thursday caused the Metropolis University dorms to close, so Lois shared the apartment with her cousin Chloe Sullivan for over two years. At the time, Chloe Sullivan and Lois Lane were both Daily Planet journalists who have written articles attacking LuthorCorp. Despite Lex Luthor's position as their landlord, he did not object to their staying in the Talon apartment. That said, he is not above abusing his position: in the past, he has used his status as landlord to excuse snooping in the Talon apartment.

Lois moved out of the Talon when Chloe's fiancé Jimmy Olsen moved in. Currenty, Chloe and Jimmy are the residents of the Talon. Also Lana Lang has moved in with Chloe temporarily until her husband returns. In 2009 Lana Lang left Smallville for good so Chloe now stays by herself until Lois and Jimmy return. Jimmy has still not returned. Chloe and Davis Bloome recently took up residence in the basement of the Talon. Currently Chloe is now the sole person in the talon since lois is missing and jimmy is dead.
edit Talon employees

* Lana Lang opened the coffee shop herself and worked there until she left for Paris, France in 2004.
* Martha Kent in 2004 pleaded with her husband Jonathan Kent for his consent in her taking the position as Talon manager. She said that in addition to the extra income, she needed an outlet and a place to keep herself busy.
* Kara Kent worked as a waitress there during her short stay in Smallville. Although she often disappeared and confessed to making a "terrible cup of coffee", she managed to keep her job because of her friendship with Lex Luthor.
* Clark Kent worked at the Talon for one day. Due to his habitual lateness and tendency to disappear, Lana Lang reluctantly hired him, then fired him when he predictably disappeared during his shift.
* Lois Lane worked as a waitress in Season 4 and Season 5, until she began helping Jonathan Kent run for State Senate..
* Lex Luthor was a silent partner, until he bought out Lana's share.
* Tess Mercer is currently the director of LuthorCorp so she indirectly owns the Talon.

Lana: The Talon makes three hundred dollars in a good day.
Season Three, Memoria, deleted scene

Lana: I got accepted at the Paris School of the Arts for my senior year. But I can't afford to go.
Lex: Well congratulations and umm, consider it covered.
Lana: You know, I don't want a loan and I don't want a gift. I just.. I want you to buy me out of my share at the Talon.
Season Three, Memoria, deleted scene

edit Notes

* Lana says that the Talon makes "three hundred dollars in a good day". That means that the Talon makes a maximum of $109.5k a year. This explains why Lana was willing to sell out her share for the cost of a year's tuition at a Parisian high school. It also explains why Lex was eager to close down the Talon, and open a more lucrative business in its place.

PostSubject: Daily Planet   Sun Aug 02, 2009 2:12 pm

The Daily Planet is one of Metropolis's oldest and most respected newspapers. [1] Its headquarters are located at 1000 Broadway in Metropolis, Kansas [2], next door to LuthorCorp Plaza [3] and across the street from the Ace of Clubs[4] . As of 2005, Pauline Kahn was the Editor-in-Chief. [5] Its slogan is "Straight from the Source." [6]

In 2007, Lex Luthor revealed that he had purchased the Daily Planet [7]. He has already started to exert editorial control over the paper. He hand-picked Lois Lane to write a flattering exposé about him, but when she instead threatened to detail his numerous crimes, he killed the story. [8] He monitors email and data communication of his employees. [9] He also fired several staff members, including Chloe Sullivan after she lied to him about a key that Lionel had left for her. [10] It is unclear if the Daily Planet's reputation will survive his ownership.

Since the disappearance of Lex, Tess Mercer has taken over ownership of the Planet. Tess then asked Oliver if he wanted to invest his own money into LuthorCorp in a merger deal with his own company, Queen Industries. He agreed and they announced the deal at a LuthorCorp board meeting to the dismay of Lex who used Winslow Schott to plant a bomb to kill Oliver and Tess. Tess wasn't present but Oliver suffered some minor injuries before getting revenge by killing Lex with his own weapon, Toyman.

The Daily Planet building's most distinguishing and famous feature is the enormous globe that sits on top of the building. The Planet accepts four high school students as summer interns from the state.[11]

edit Staff
Lois Lane has been a reporter at the Daily Planet for over a year.
Lois joined the Planet staff in 2007.
She was hired away from the Metropolis Inquisitor by Grant Gabriel (Kara). Shortly after he hired her, Grant had Lois reporting on exclusive assignments all over the country.[12] When she and Grant started dating, Lois decided that the relationship was worth the risk of damaging her career. She and Grant began a relationship while he was her manager, but Lois never learned his true identity and apparently is not aware of his death (Blue). Lois put a great deal of focus on the goings-on of Lex Luthor, and Lex used a variety of methods to monitor, control or thwart her investigations. In addition to the exposé,[13] she reported on Lex's near-death experience in Detroit, a story which he also likely prevented from being published (Fracture). She also helped Jimmy Olsen investigate the death of Patricia Swann (Veritas) and focused on Lex Luthor's frequent trips to the Arctic Circle (Arctic). The first onscreen indication of Lois publishing a story came in the summer of 2008. She and Clark Kent investigated a bus explosion right outside the Daily Planet building and her story was a front-page headline (Plastique).

(Currently Lois is missing since she was transported to an unknown time period.)

Clark Kent accepted Lois' suggestion to apply to the Daily Planet, and is now a reporter at the desk opposite Lois (Odyssey). His first assignment was an obituary for Tommy Walker (Plastique).

Perry White is a reporter at the Daily Planet who wrote an article on Lionel Luthor's conviction in September of 2004 (Gone). He had previously worked at the Daily Planet where he was nominated for multiple Pulitzer prizes, before being forced out for working on a story about Lionel Luthor (Perry).

Randall Brady is the City Editor for the Daily Planet following the death of Grant Gabriel at a steak house. In an alternate timeline, he promoted Lois Lane after the story she wrote on Clark Kent's alien heritage and time as the Red-Blue Blur.
edit Former Staff
Chloe receives a by-line in the paper in Subterranean.

Chloe Sullivan was an intern at the Planet twice during her high school years. Her sophomore year, she was picked after writing an essay on her experience of being kidnapped. [14] She helped a reporter during her summer intern. [15] Her junior year, Lionel Luthor arranged for her to have a column, called "Sullivan's Travels", after she agreed to investigate Clark Kent. He later withdrew the favor when he believed she betrayed him. He also blacklisted her name, hindering her efforts to realize her dream to write for the paper. Chloe attempted to write under the name "Lois Lane," but her editor was killed before he published any of her articles. As a college student, Chloe was hired by Pauline Kahn as an intern at the Daily Planet. [16] She began writing obituaries and classified advertisements and answering the 24-hour news hotline. She then wrote small general-interest articles. She had at least four major stories published [17] before she was fired by Lex (Descent).

Pauline Kahn was the Editor (Thirst)

Grant Gabriel, an unknowing clone of Julian Luthor, was a managing editor at the Daily Planet before Lex had him murdered (Kara).

Max Taylor edited Chloe's column before being killed by his hypnotized assistant (Delete).

Andrea Rojas worked at the Planet as a secretary, before quitting to become the masked superhero Angel of Vengeance (Vengeance).

Linda Lake was a gossip columnist who worked at the Daily Planet. She used her ability to transform her body into water to gather gossip and print it in her columns (Hydro).

Brennan was a reporter for the Daily Planet. Unfortunately, he was shot and killed by hired killers trying to block the story from being published (Noir).

Dinah Lance was a conservative talk show host who worked at the Daily Planet. She is also the alter-ego of the superheroine Black Canary. It is unclear if she quit her job to join Oliver Queen's team of superheroes, or if she still works at the Planet (Siren).

Jimmy Olsen worked as an on-location photographer. He quit his job in March 2009 after recovering from his marriage incident in the hospital, but before long his marriage to Chloe Sullivan completely dissolved as a result of his frustration. He left a profile about Davis Bloome on Tess Mercer's desk before leaving the Daily Planet for good.
edit Physical Layout
The basement of the Daily Planet, primarily where interns work.

The Daily Planet is based in a tall skyscraper building. The top reporters at the paper work on higher level floors in the building; new reporters literally start in the basement of the building and work their way up.

Top reporters, columnists and editors like Grant Gabriel and Linda Lake also get their own offices, while junior reporters and photographers work in exposed desks in an open plan layout. Owner and publisher Lex Luthor also has a large private office at the Planet.

Currently, Lois and Clark work in the open plan "basement" at the Daily Planet (Chloe used to work here as well, before she was fired). There is a supply closet near the basement. A large staircase in the center of the building goes all the way from the basement to the roof (Gemini). There is also a bank of elevators that connects the floors in the building.

Some floors appear to be dedicated to specific departments. For example, there is an entire floor dedicated to political correspondence, where political correspondents like Brennan worked (Noir).

There is an enormous walk-in freezer in the building, presumably servicing the Daily Planet kitchen. Lois and Jimmy were locked in the freezer by Lex Luthor's assistant, Gina (Descent).
edit In the Comics
The Daily Planet team
In the comics, the Daily Planet will be the place of business for:

* Lois Lane - Top ace reporter, partner and wife of Clark Kent
* Clark Kent - Mild-mannered reporter/Superman, partner and husband of Lois Lane
* Jimmy Olsen - Photographer, Superman's pal
* Perry White - Editor-in-chief
* Cat Grant - Gossip Columnist

It also deals with many tribulations of ownership, and passes through the hands of Franklin Stern, Lex Luthor (as in Season 7 of Smallville), and (as in current comics) Bruce Wayne.

edit Quotes

Lex: You're no longer writing my exposé.
Lois: Nuh-uh. You'll have to take that up with my boss.
Lex: I am your boss. Merry Christmas, Lois. I just bought the Daily Planet.

Gemini, Season 7

edit Notes

* There is no "The" in "Daily Planet". In the newspaper itself, proper usage is either the Daily Planet or the Planet, but never The Daily Planet or The Planet. [18] The logo above the front door says "Daily Planet". Despite this, the globe at the top of the building clearly says "The Daily Planet" [19] and the closed captions for episodes show THE DAILY PLANET or THE PLANET italicized all together. [20]
* The Marine Building in Vancouver stands in as the Daily Planet building in Smallville. It has 22 floors and at 97.8m, was the tallest skyscraper in the city until 1939. [21]

Metropolis is a major city in the state of Kansas. It is home to many businesses and organizations, including the Daily Planet, LuthorCorp, Queen Industries and the Isis Foundation.

Along with Gotham City,Keystone City, Star City, Hub City, Blüdhaven, Coast City and Themyscira, Metropolis is one of the confirmed DC Comics locales to be present in the world of Smallville.

The Luthor family keeps a prominent presence in Metropolis, employing nearly half of the city's population [citation needed] and owning its main newspaper.

edit Neighborhoods

Metropolis is made up several neighborhoods.
[edit] Suicide Slums
Clark and Andrea in Suicide Slums.

Suicide Slums is the neighborhood that Lionel Luthor and Morgan Edge grew up in. It is a crime-filled neighborhood, and is where Martha Kent was robbed of Jonathan's watch. It is also the location where Lionel killed both of his parents to collect insurance money to start his company LuthorCorp. Suicide Slums has the highest crime rates and the lowest property values, and is probably the most commonly mentioned neighborhood.
[edit] Downtown
The Daily Planet and a few other downtown skyscrapers dressed up for Christmas.

Downtown Metropolis is where most of the businesses like LuthorCorp Plaza and the Daily Planet are, and is probably the most commonly shown district on the show.
[edit] Outskirts

The outskirts are at the very edge of Metropolis. Summerholt Institute is located here.
edit Residents
[edit] Current Residents
Former Metropolis resident Jimmy Olsen.

* Oliver Queen also lives in the Queen Tower loft off and on.
* Lois Lane acquired a new apartment in Metropolis after she got a pay rise.
* Nell Potter and Dean Winters moved to Metropolis after they got married in Season Two.

[edit] Former Residents
Former Metropolis resident Lionel Luthor.

* Lachlan Luthor and Eliza Luthor once lived in the Suicide Slums section of Metropolis.
* Lionel Luthor and Morgan Edge grew up in Suicide Slums together. Lionel lived in Metropolis before his death in 2008. He is buried here.
* Kal lived there in a penthouse apartment, most likely full of stolen furniture.
* Andrea Rojas used to live in Suicide Slums.
* Chloe Sullivan and Lana Lang used to live in a Metropolis University dorm room together.
* Jimmy Olsen formerly lived at 200 North Hamilton Drive, Metropolis.[1] He moved to Smallville with his future wife Chloe Sullivan into the Talon apartment.

edit Businesses

Metropolis is home to several major and minor businesses.
[edit] LuthorCorp

See main article: LuthorCorp
LuthorCorp Plaza.

LuthorCorp Plaza, the headquarters of LuthorCorp, is in Metropolis. LuthorCorp is in many fields of business. LuthorCorp Plaza is also home to Level 33.1, a floor dedicated to metahuman research and experimentation. The Luthors own the Metropolis Alexandria Hotel, Metron Pharmaceutical Labs, and even the Daily Planet. LuthorCorp Plaza is also the scene where Lionel Luthor was pushed out of his office window by his son Lex in 2008.

Lionel founded LuthorCorp, but the company was taken over by his son Lex after Lionel was sent to prison; Lex has owned it ever since. Since Lex was missing presumed dead by the government, his protégé Tess Mercer has taken over the reins of LuthorCorp until Lex returns.
[edit] Queen Industries

See main article: Queen Industries
Queen Tower.

Queen Tower is the Metropolis office of Queen Industries. CEO Oliver Queen sometimes lives in the loft apartment of Queen Tower.

Queen Industries is an electronics company. It had the only working satellite on Dark Thursday which Oliver keeps as a trade secret. The founder of Queen Industries, Robert Queen, and his wife Laura, are both deceased.

Queen Industries also paid Pamela Black to develop a healing drug called RL65.
[edit] Other
The bank Kal robs.

* Metropolis has at least two banks; one that Kal robs and one that he saves.
* Metropolis has a luxury car dealership.
* Metropolis has a renowned steakhouse, outside of which Grant Gabriel was murdered. Jimmy Olsen also made plans to take Chloe Sullivan on a date to an unnamed expensive restaurant.
* Metropolis also has a number of skyscrapers visible in its skyline.

[edit] Museums

See main article: Metropolis Inquisitor

The Metropolis Inquisitor is often referred to as a rag or a tabloid but even with such a bad reputation, it is still very popular. Roger Nixon worked for the Inquisitor. Until his death, he had a special arrangement with Lex Luthor: Lex fed him stories and Roger made Lex look good. Lois Lane started her journalism career at the Inquisitor.
[edit] Metropolis Journal
Metropolis Journal editor Carrie Castle.

Thanks to Lex Luthor, Carrie Castle is the managing editor of the Metropolis Journal. Carrie came to Smallville to do an article on Lex. At first he refused, but she managed to win him over. Carrie did not write the flattering expose that she promised, so Lex arranged for her to become managing editor if she altered the story, which she did.

The Metropolis Journal is extremely rarely mentioned on the show anymore. Unlike the Metropolis Inquisitor, it is not a tabloid but it is still not nearly as respected as the Daily Planet.
edit Medical Centers

Metropolis has many medical centers. It has two hospitals, a mental asylum, a cosmetics center, a neurological center, a surgical clinic and two pharmaceutical companies. Metropolis also had a clinic that helped cure meteor-infected humans.
[edit] Metropolis General Hospital

See main article: Metropolis General Hospital
Metropolis General Hospital doctor Helen Bryce.

Metropolis General Hospital is where Lex Luthor was treated by then-medical student Helen Bryce for alcohol poisoning several years before they officially met.

Until Sarah Conroy moved to Smallville with her uncle, she was treated at Metropolis General for a coma.

Lana Lang was treated here for a minor injury from a motor vehicle accident when she hit Victor Stone with her car. (Victor was not injured and took Lana to the hospital.)

Davis Bloome worked at the Metropolis General Hospital as an on duty EMT. When a bus exploded outside the Daily Planet, Davis and a host other EMTs were on hand to offer assistance. Davis checked out Bette Sans Souci when she was dazed after the bus explosion. Lois and Clark also entered the hospital to investigate Tommy Walker who was suspected of causing the explosion.
[edit] Metropolis Children's Hospital

Metropolis Children's Hospital is where Justin Gaines was treated for his many severe injuries following a hit-and-run accident. Nathan Wells was a surgeon there until he had an elevator accident where his hands were cut off. In the hospital's ER, they re-attached Wells' hands, but he no longer had the necessary fine motor skills to be a surgeon. Wells also had many malpractice suits filed against him in Lowell County. Metropolis Children's hospital is also called Metropolis University Children's Hospital.
[edit] Belle Reve Sanitarium
Belle Reve Sanitarium.

Belle Reve Sanitarium is a mental institution run by the United States government. In addition to the mentally ill, the sanitarium is also where several criminally-psychotic metahumans from Smallville are receiving treatment.

The staff at Belle Reve is notoriously corrupt. Belle Reve lacks security in order to deal with most metahumans, and many patients have died or been transferred to Level 33.1. Not many patients ever end up being released. Belle Reve is probably the most frequently-mentioned and well-known Metropolis medical center.

In French, "Belle Reve" means "Beautiful Dream."
[edit] Summerholt Institute
The Summerholt entrance.

Summerholt Institute is an institution located on the outskirts of Metropolis; it is dedicated to research in memory manipulation.

Lex Luthor tried to retrieve memories that he had lost during electro-shock therapy at Belle Reeve here. Some other patients who went here were Molly Griggs, Ryan James and Kevin Grady. Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan were forced against their will to receive treatment here; luckily for both of them, it was stopped just in time before it was too late.

Just like Belle Reve, Summerholt has many corrupt staff members. Dr. Lawrence Garner was the chief neurologist and founder of Summerholt. Summerholt also employs a number of orderlies.
[edit] Metron Pharmaceutical Labs

Metron Pharmaceutical Labs is a pharmaceutical company owned by LuthorCorp. It conducted research on the Lazarus Serum, a drug made from Clark Kent's blood and designed to bring back the dead. Adam Knight, a patient on the drug, later killed many of the staff at Metron. Molecular biologist Dr. Lia Teng helped develop the serum.
[edit] Other Clinics
BCE neurosurgeon Curtis Knox.

* The BCE Clinic was a clinic that helped cure meteor-infected victims. Dr. Curtis Knox was a neurosurgeon who worked there. He was apparently immortal, and had been alive for centuries. * Club Atlantis is a club that Clark Kent frequented when he exiled himself to Metropolis for three months in the summer of 2003.
* The Windgate Club is a gentleman's club in Metropolis. Chloe Sullivan, Lois Lane and Clark Kent went investigating there to solve the murder of a dancer.
* The Ace of Clubs is located inside the City Center at the top of the NSA Satellite Building. It held its grand opening in the Spring of 2008.

edit Education
The Metropolis University football field.

* Metropolis has a four-year university, Metropolis University (or "Met U"), which sustained extensive damage during Dark Thursday. Chloe Sullivan is currently studying here. Lois Lane attended there until she was expelled. Lana Lang used to attend there. Metropolis University has a very strong athletic and astronomy program. Martha Kent and Jonathan Kent both graduated from here.
* Metropolis also has at least one high school, Metropolis High School. Alumni include Jimmy Olsen and Victor Stone.

edit Government and law enforcement

Metropolis has the same law, means and resources of any major metropolitan city. In addition there are also several federal government facilities within the city.
[edit] NSA

The Metropolis Police Department is the Metropolis police force. They arrested Lex Luthor after the murder of Lia Teng and her team. Officer Mason was in charge the case where a tenement fire killed Lionel Luthor's parents.

MPD also came to Lois Lane's dorm room when they suspected her of paralyzing another Metropolis University student.

Maggie Sawyer is the police captain. She trailed Kal's crime spree in 2003, questioning Jack Jennings about the murder of a Windgate Club dancer in 2005, and Lionel's murder in 2008.
[edit] Vigilantes

In early 2006, a vigilante known as the Angel of Vengeance arrived in Metropolis to protect its citizens from gangsters.

In late 2006, a vigilante who became commonly known as the Green Arrow stole illegal goods from rich tycoons and gave it to charities. He also stopped thieves and robbers in and around Metropolis using a variety of trick bows and arrows. Green Arrow was last spotted in Metropolis in January 2008 and has yet to be seen since.

In late 2008, a unknown hero began to clear up Metropolis of crime and was soon photographed by Jimmy Olsen as a fast moving red and blue blur. This Good Samaritan became the talk of the city after his photo was run on the Daily Planet front page and since then has become known popularly as the Red Blue Blur but the Red-Blue Blur recently asked Lois Lane to think of a different name.
edit Location

Geographical Location
Metropolis' neighbor Hub City.

Metropolis is located in the United States of America in the state of Kansas. It is right on a very large river.[4] Its neighbors include Smallville, Gotham City, Granville, Hub City and Edge City.

Metropolis' distance from Smallville is unclear because the dialogue and actions of the characters contradict. Chloe Sullivan has twice mentioned[5] that the LuthorCorp headquarters building was a three-hour drive away, then indicated that the drive was about two hours.[6] In addition, producers have stated that they also consider it to be three hours away.[citation needed] However, the fact that the Metropolis skyline can be seen by the naked eye from the top of the top of the windmill in Chandler's Field indicates that it is less than 100 miles away. In 1989, before their departure from Metropolis to Smallville, Lionel Luthor told his son Lex that they were going to a town "just outside the city." In addition, the characters often commute from Metropolis to Smallville several times a day for school or work in considerably less than three hours.

However, in spite of its mid-continent location, it is depicted as having a port. No explanation has ever been given.

Real Location

Smallville is largely filmed in the suburbs of Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. A respectable city in both size and diversity, Vancouver's cityscape doubles for Metropolis' in the show. [7] It is also on the Pacific Ocean which provides a very large body of water for the show.
edit In the Comics
Metropolis as it appears in the comics, with Superman on patrol.

Because the characterization of Metropolis in the show is relatively limited, only a few conclusions can be drawn in terms of the liberties the show takes from the source material.

The most obvious difference between the two is geographical location. In the comics, Metropolis is a city on the east coast, neighboring New York City and Gotham City. By placing Metropolis in the state of Kansas, the producers created a point of easy access for its characters, but also slightly baffled audiences with the large bodies of water surrounding the city. Kansas is a land-locked state, so the waters depicted are most likely a lake or very large river. (Most likely the Missouri River, as it is the only large body of water in or near Kansas, and that would make Kansas City the most probable location for Metropolis)

The city is known for being one of largest and wealthiest cities on Earth, nicknamed "The Big Apricot." It is the home of Superman and his family. It is also home to the Daily Planet newspaper, and is the location of the world headquarters of LexCorp. Speculation from comic readers lead them to believe that before the show ends, LuthorCorp will in fact become LexCorp.

The two tallest buildings in the city are the Emperor Building and the 96 Floor LexCorp Headquarters.

In the comics, nearly all the action takes place in Metropolis, while in the show, a large portion of the show takes place in Smallville instead.
edit In Other Media
The Metropolis skyline as depicted in Superman Returns.

Metropolis has been featured in other media. Most of Superman III and Superman Returns takes place in Metropolis. Also around half of Superman Meets Batman takes place in Metropolis.

PostSubject: Fortress of Solitude   Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:07 pm

The Fortress of Solitude is Clark Kent's Kryptonian home in the Arctic.
It was destroyed by Lex Luthor when he put the Orb into the Fortress' console; this turned the Fortress back into the Crystal of Knowledge.
The Fortress
The interior of the Fortress

Clark later recreated the Fortress from the Crystal of Knowledge and the Fortress has resumed its role as Clark Kent's Kryptonian home. However after Brainiac was removed from Chloe Sullivan, Brainiac infected the Fortress but was removed after being defeated by Clark Kent and The Legion of The Superheroes.

The Fortress was also home to Clark's Kryptonian father, Jor-El, an artificial entity serving as Clark's Kryptonian guide on Earth. The Fortress of Solitude was a storehouse for all the knowledge in the universe gathered by Kryptonians, including that of their destroyed home planet, Krypton. This information was originally stored in the Stones of Power, which combined to become the Crystal of Knowledge used to create the Fortress. Zoners, Zod, and Baern referred to the Fortress as the "Fortress of Knowledge".

It was possible to teleport to the Fortress from the Kawatche Caves using the Key. The Fortress also contained a teleportation device that allows visitors to teleport back to the Kawatche Caves, but Jor-El consciously teleported the residents back. The Fortress also contained the ability to time travel using crystals from the console which Clark has used twice, once to save Lana Lang and another time to save his infant self on Krypton at the hands of Brainiac.

Powers and Abilities

The Fortress uses native Kryptonian technology to achieve feats of immense power. In the past, it has opened a portal to the Phantom Zone, reversed time, and created a complete solar eclipse. Given the broad range of its powers and abilities, it is the single most powerful entity in the Smallville universe, with power surpassing even that of Clark Kent and other Kryptonians. These powers are usually accessed by Kryptonian crystals placed inside a control console at the Fortress. Sometimes a single crystal is placed into the console alone. Other times, multiple crystals are used and they are placed within different areas of the console and moved around; in this sense, the Fortress console seems to resemble a programmable computer system. So far, the only entity shown to be capable of such programming has been the Zor-El replicant.

Usually the crystals used in the Fortress have been native to the Fortress, but outside crystals can also be made to be compatible with the Fortress. Brainiac created a black crystal that was capable of accessing the Fortress' ability to open the Phantom Zone. Zor-El also created a blue crystal that could use the power of the Fortress to project a living version of several entities stored inside the crystal, including both himself and Lara-El. Not just anyone can access the console and crystals of the Fortress. Milton Fine attempted to convince Clark to put a black crystal inside of the Fortress console, rather than do it himself. This suggests that only certain individuals can access the console and use the crystals. This is confirmed when Kara attempted to pull the blue crystal out of the Fortress console but couldn't; Zor-El told her that only Clark could pull the crystal out. Later Clark was able to successfully destroy the crystal. Although he has yet to use the Kryptonian crystals or console without guidance, Clark has always seemed to have access to the Fortress console.

The Fortress is also home to Jor-El, an artificial entity with the brainwaves of Clark Kent's biological father. It is unclear whether or not Jor-El actually has innate powers himself, or if he is somehow able to tap into the power of the Fortress. So far, he has demonstrated the ability to seemingly restructure matter at will; he has transported Martha and Lois back to Smallville, taken Clark's powers away, restored Clark's life and power, froze Clark inside of a giant crystal, released Clark from the crystal, and restored (most of) Chloe Sullivan's memories. In each case, Jor-El has used these powers without the presence of a crystal or appearing to use the console. It is also unclear whether or not Jor-El needs to actually use the console to activate the power of the Fortress crystals. In Reckoning, he handed Clark a crystal that will reset time back to the beginning of the day. Even though no console was involved, when Clark took the crystal he was suddenly sent back in time to the morning.

The Fortress somehow contains vast reservoirs of power, although the initial source of this energy is unclear. The Fortress is capable of recharging from external energy sources such as the Crystal of El.
Vulnerabilities

"The dagger is part of this Fortress. Plunging it into Fine destroyed all copies of him but also damaged this structure and released Zod." - Jor-El to Martha Kent, Zod

The one major vulnerability of the Fortress is the Kryptonian dagger that Jor-El gave to Clark. The dagger was apparently capable of inflicting damage even on super powered Kryptonians. But that capability came at a heavy price: when Brainiac was stabbed with a Kryptonian dagger, he was somehow able to access the power of the Fortress to open a portal to the Phantom Zone. Normally that would require access to the crystals and console of the Fortress; somehow because the dagger was part of the Fortress, Brainiac was able to circumvent the access limitations of the console, and access the power of the Fortress directly through the dagger. [1]

In addition, somehow Brainiac was also able to drain the entire power reservoirs of the Fortress leading to its seeming "death". It is unclear exactly how this happened. After the Fortress' death, the connection between the Fortress and Jor-El's oracle (Lionel Luthor) was broken.
Console
The console in the Fortress.
The Console at the Fortress of Solitude is the main power source within the fortress and is the main way of manipulating the power of the fortress. It is made up of very dense Kryptonian crystals that appear impenetrable as well as the surroundings crystals within the fortress as various things that have been thrust against them haven't damage them or the crystals were about to cause harm.
The crystals are dense enough to piece Brainiac.
This is evident when Brainiac was thrown onto the crystals and the console destroyed that copied of Brainiac, when Clark smashed Zor-El's Blue crystal against them and when Zor-El was about to kill Kara by pushing her onto the crystals in the surrounding fortress.

The crystals have a varied amount of powers mostly have yet to be explored but are almost capable of anything at either Clark's wish or Jor-El's will. The initial crystal thrust from the console was so that in future Clark would be able to have contact his biological father Jor-El. This crystal was also one of the first parts of Clark's training by beginning to study Clark with knowledge of his home planet Krypton. Other crystals in the fortress have time abilities with one crystal only allowing Clark to relive one earth day with him using this ability to save Lana from death but this caused Jonathan Kent's death. But it also has capabilities of creating portals to and from the Phantom Zone and also to Clark's home planet of Krypton.

The console however cannot be affected by anybody and only Kal-El can activated it manually unless Jor-El does so. This is because the Fortress is assigned to Kal-El and his training and future guidance by Jor-El. The console has only ever been used by Kal-El and Zor-El after his blue crystal was placed within the console shutting out Jor-El and also after Brainiac was removed from Chloe Sullivan and hid and corrupted the Fortress taking control from Jor-El.
Season Five

After Clark formed the Crystal of Knowledge from the Stones of Power, he was transported to a remote, snowy region in the Arctic and threw the Crystal of Knowledge into a bank of snow. As the crystal melted into the ice, it grew into a huge, crystalline building: the Fortress of Solitude.
Clark begins his Kryptonian education and training.

When Clark first entered the Fortress, he was greeted by Jor-El, who told him that he must stay and prepare to save Earth from the coming of Brainiac and General Zod. Jor-El began training Clark to fulfill his destiny and so started showing Clark all of the knowledge of Krypton, but Chloe Sullivan, who had also been transported to the Arctic along with Clark, made her way into the Fortress shivering as a sub-zero wind blew in as Clark began his training. Chloe collapsed from the cold and begged Clark to save her. Clark severed his link with Jor-El to come to Chloe's aid, but Jor-El forbade him to leave. He finally acquiesced, warning Clark that he must return before sunset or there would be terrible consequences. When Clark failed to return to the Fortress in time, Jor-El stripped him of his powers.

Sometime later, when Clark was shot and killed by Gabriel Duncan, Jor-El possessed the body of Lionel Luthor, retrieved Clark's body, and brought him to the Fortress, where he brought Clark back to life with all his powers restored, but with a price: the life of someone he loves.
Clark defeats Brainiac and prevents the return of General Zod.

Later, Clark was influenced by Milton Fine to destroy the Fortress in order to stop Jor-El from killing Martha Kent. When he brought Fine to the Fortress, Clark was given a black crystal and instructed to insert it into the Fortress' control console. Once Clark did this, the Fortress began to self-destruct while a portal to the Phantom Zone opened. However, Clark managed to stop Fine and saved the Fortress.
Clark reveals his abilities to Lana at the Fortress.

A few months later, Clark decided to reveal his powers to Lana and brought her to the Fortress. It was here he proposed to her, and she later accepted. Lana was killed in a car accident, fulfilling Jor-El's warning that the life of someone Clark loves will be exchanged for Clark's restored life. Clark begged Jor-El to bring Lana back to life, and Jor-El gave him a crystal that sent Clark back in time, a day before the tragedy occurred. Clark was able to prevent Lana's death, but he failed to save Jonathan Kent, who died of a heart attack, once and for all fulfilling Jor-El's prediction.

Months later, Clark ventured back to the Fortress, where he spoke with Jor-El and learned that it was Zod who was responsible for the destruction of Krypton. Jor-El gave him a Kryptonian dagger, which he had to use to kill Lex Luthor, who had been chosen by Brainiac to be the vessel for Zod, and prevent Zod's return. However, Clark could not bring himself to kill Lex, so he hurled the dagger at Brainiac, stabbing him in the chest. Unfortunately, Brainiac managed to gain access to the Fortress through the dagger and opened a portal that released Zod's spirit into Lex's body.
Season Six
Lois, unconscious, in the Fortress.

When her plane crashed in the Arctic near the Fortress, Martha dragged an unconscious Lois Lane into the Fortress and was met by Jor-El. Jor-El explained to Martha that her and Lois were kidnapped by Brainiac, and that he had given Clark a Kryptonian dagger in order to destroy Zod's vessel. Because Clark instead used the dagger against Brainiac, he not only destroyed Brainiac and all of his copies, but also damaged the Fortress and allowed Zod to inhabit Lex. Jor-El told Martha that she must use the dagger to kill Zod, now in Lex's body, in order to save Earth. After expressing his gratitude toward Martha for raising Clark, Jor-El sent Martha and Lois back to Smallville using the Fortress' remaining energy and shut down.
After returning from the Phantom Zone and defeating Zod, Clark returned to the Fortress and stored the Crystal of El there for safekeeping. He tried to talk to Jor-El, but Jor-El wouldn't answer, leading him to the conclusion that the Fortress was now "dead," unaware that the Fortress was damaged after he destroyed Brainiac and accidentally released Zod.
The Fortress of Solitude is recharged.

Later, after Clark and Raya had reunited and faced Baern, an escaped Zoner who could absorb and release large amounts of energy. Baern was not strong enough to face two Kryptonians and sensed the Kryptonian black box, absorbing enough energy to kill Clark and Raya. They went to the Fortress with the hope of restoring it, but Raya was distraught with the loss of the Fortress, passionate about its significance to the both of them. After they discovered they needed more power, Clark and Raya lured Baern to the Fortress to face him in seclusion without potentially harming others. In the confrontation Baern killed Raya, but Clark used the Crystal of El to send him back to the Phantom Zone. In her last moments, Raya pleaded with Clark to use the energy stored in the crystal to restore the Fortress.

PostSubject: Fortress of Solitude cont.   Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:07 pm

After Clark met his Kryptonian cousin Kara, he went to the Fortress and questioned Jor-El recalling the last time a girl named "Kara" came into his life. Clark asked Jor-El if he could begin his training, only for Jor-El to tell him instead to watch over Kara, claiming she could not be trusted.
Later in Blue, Clark heard the voice of his mother, Lara, from the Blue Crystal, and this transported him to the Fortress, immediately, Jor-El warns Clark off putting the crystal in the console, but he ignored Jor-El's advice and placed Kara's blue crystal in the console, creating replicants of Lara-El and Zor-El. Zor-El took control of the Fortress, using it to create an eclipse designed to wipe out all humans on Earth. Clark managed to destroy the blue crystal, stopping the eclipse and ending the lives of Zor-El and Lara. However Kara somehow disappears from the Fortress, transported to Detroit, Michigan without her memory.
Clark frozen at the Fortress.
Clark initially blames Jor-El for Kara's disappearance, but Jor-El claims that he was not responsible, Zor-El was. Even after Clark pleads for help, Jor-El claims that was not his mission. Jor-El then chastises Clark for continuing to disobey him, incapable of learning his lesson. Jor-El states that this defiance can't go unpunished, and encases Clark in ice for a month within the Fortress.

A month later, when Bizarro flew to the Fortress in search of Dax-Ur's shield, he tries to pose as Clark. However Jor-El sees through Bizarro's ruse and orders him to leave. After mocking Jor-El, Bizarro leaves. The encounter disturbs Jor-El enough to release Clark from his imprisonment to face the last phantom.
Chloe and Kara in the Fortress.
After Kara returns to Smallville and grows closer with Lex, Clark planned to ask Jor-El to restore her memory and powers to prevent Lex from learning their secret. Before he could even retrieve the Key from the loft, he is attacked by a team hired by Lionel Luthor. After realizing Lionel had kidnapped and imprisoned Clark, Chloe uses the Key to take Kara to the Fortress. Chloe gives an impassioned plea to the silent Jor-El, informing him of the danger Clark was in, begging him to return Kara's memory and powers, professing her love and desire to protect Clark. The Fortress activates and envelops Kara in energy, restoring her memory and powers and returning her old self to normal. Clark went to the Fortress to help find Kara after Brainiac took her prisoner to Krypton 1986 and information from the Swann Journal. Although Jor-El didn't speak, Clark heard audio transmissions from Kara warning him about the fact that Brainiac was wants to kill Clark when he was still a baby, and also revealing that she was on Krypton.
The location of the Fortress.
Clark went to the Fortress, although it was unseen, and used a portal to go to Krypton of the past to save his younger self and Kara from Brainiac.
The fortress falling apart after Lex inserts the Orb into the console.
Later on, an Orb was found by Lex Luthor in the mantel piece of the Luthor Mansion and activated it by inserting the missing piece it revealed a holographic map of the Earth, showing the exact location of the Fortress in the arctic. When he arrived at the Fortress, Lex found Clark there, and discovered that he was The Traveler and having the idea that he is going to protect the human race from him, Lex inserted the device on the console and it caused the entire Fortress to collapse, with Clark and Lex inside.
Season Eight
Clark rebuilds the Fortress.
It was revealed that the orb didn't destroy the Fortress but instead turned it back into the Crystal of Knowledge. The LuthorCorp digging team discovered the crystal buried in the ice and snow. They gave it to Tess Mercer who possesses the crystal, until it was stolen by an anonymous contact who has stolen the Crystal from her. They identify themselves as only "X."
Clark takes Chloe to the Fortress.

However, the crystal was mysteriously returned to Clark through a package in the mail, but it had no return address on it. Kara suggested that Clark could recreate the Fortress with it, but he refused after the crystal was used to send him to the Phantom Zone and he was unsure of what it would do.
After Chloe was being corrupted by Brainiac and she began forgetting all of her memories only remembering them by researching her whole life. This was because Brainaic had been replacing all of her memories with Kryptonian Code ready for him to fully reboot in her body. Chloe told Clark and he took the Crystal of Knowledge to the Arctic and repeated the process that he had done three years ago throwing it into the snow in the distance and rebuilt the Fortress.
Brainiac corrupts the Fortress.
Clark entered the Fortress and was greeted by Jor-El before the two had a stern talk about the Orb and the after effects of Clark losing his powers and Clark sternly told Jor-El to trust him as a man and that he has learnt so much since. Clark then asked Jor-El to help him cure Chloe which he agreed. Clark then took Chloe to the Fortress and Jor-El removed Brainiac from her system but not before warning that he would not know the outcome as Brainiac is unpredictable. Brainiac was removed and his liquid form exposed in which he hid in the Fortress. Clark later returned to the Fortress to thank Jor-El and talked about "the ultimate destroyer" before Clark respectfully left. Brainiac then revealed himself to Jor-El taking over and corrupting the Fortress.

On the day of Chloe and Jimmy's wedding, Doomsday crashed Chloe and Jimmy's wedding killing and injuring numerous guests and severly injuring Jimmy, identified and kidnapped Chloe and took her to the Fortress at Brainaic's calling placing her down so he could inhabit her body once more as a vessel.
Brainiac had drained the knowledge from the Fortress when he corrupted it, and possibly damaged the connection with Jor-El to it as well. Davis awoke in the Fortress unaware of his location and what the building was but saw Chloe now possessed by Brainiac and he told Davis about his arrival on earth and connection to Chloe and told him that he will make his evolve to destroy earth after he had rid the planet of its knowledge. Brainiac then placed Davis in a Kryptonian chamber for him to fully evolve when Clark arrived to speak with Jor-El about him helping Chloe and finding the creature but was greeted by Brainiac. Clark knew it was Brainiac and Brainiac teased Clark knowing he wouldn't harm Chloe's body and left to the Daily Planet. After Brainiac was disabled, his connection to the Fortress was broken and Doomsday broke out of his chamber smashing his way free.
Clark inserts the black crystal

It was soon revealed that the Fortress "died" after Brainiac was removed and all of it's knowledge and Jor-El was gone.

Clark took Davis to the Fortress in attempt to stop him from killing Clark and innocent people. Clark wanted to use the Black Crystal (crystal that Brainiac used to open a portal to the Phantom Zone) to make a vortex to the Phantom Zone, but Clark and Davis fought for control in order to stay. Chloe appeared in the Fortress, using the Kryptonian Key, and took the Black Crystal out.

Inside The Fortress Of Solitude
Superman's Fortress Of Solitude
The Fortress of Solitude is the occasional headquarters of Superman in DC Comics. It is located in the Arctic

The general public in Superman's world is either unaware or at best only vaguely aware of the existence of the Fortress, with its location kept secret from all but Superman's closest friends, family and allies (such as Jonathan & Martha Kent, Lois Lane, Supergirl, Krypto, Chris Kent, Batman & The Justice League). A trademark of the Fortress is that it contains a memorial statue of Jor-El and Lara, Superman's Kryptonian parents, holding a large globe of the planet Krypton. The fortress also contained an alien zoo, a laboratory, A Hall of Weapons , a (room-sized) computer, communications room, A Gallery room of trophies (similar to Batman's Batcave), It also contained the Phantom Zone projector, as well as various pieces of alien technology. The Fortress also became the home of the bottle city of Kandor (until it was enlarged) recently , Although Superman has living quarters at the Fortress for him and Lois, their main residence is still their apartment in Metropolis.
Earlier Fortress

Main Article: Loft

"The Fortress" was originally the name of Clark's loft inside the Kents' barn, where he would spend time alone with his telescope or homework. Clark once explained to Lana Lang that his father called it his "Fortress of Solitude", an allusion or foreshadowing to the Kryptonian hideout Clark would come to use later in life.
Trivia

* The Fortress is similar to the one in Superman: The Movie: but bigger.

* The Fortress set has changed before Season 7 from its original design so that when flashbacks of Krypton are used, it resembles Krypton more, like the set was shown in Lara and Apocalypse

Notes

* In the animated movie Superman: Brainiac Attacks! the Fortress is destroyed by Brainiac. Superman later recreated it using a crystal that was in the saved wreckage, these events are similar to the events of the episode Arctic.

PostSubject: Luthor Mansion   Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:08 pm

The Luthor Mansion is an estate of the Luthor family. It has been Lex Luthor's primary residence since he moved to Smallville in October of 2001.

As the only castle in Lowell County, the Luthor Mansion lies near the outskirts of Smallville in a heavily wooded area, affording Lex absolute seclusion. Constructed primarily of sandstone, the castle was transported across the Atlantic from Scotland to its present site in Smallville in 1989, where it was painstakingly reconstructed stone by stone. After Lex went missing in mid 2008, he elected Tess Mercer as his caretaker CEO to watch over his estate until he returned, but went she found out his true intentions, she declared him dead With Mr.Luthor gone acting CEO Tess Mercer now controls the Luthor Mansion.

Its address is 100 Sayour Road, Smallville, Kansas. [1] In Season 7 it was revealed that it was the holding place for the Orb.

* In Season 8's Injustice, Oliver, disguised as Green Arrow, breaks into Tess Mercer's volt in her room and steals Black Kryptonite that Lex Luthor once owned.

edit Staff

A small but dedicated staff maintains the mansion.

Formerly, the Palmer family headed up the household staff, and was a fixture until their son Jeff attacked Victoria Hardwick and Lex. Lex had brought the Palmers with him from Metropolis.
edit Exterior
Lex holds a photograph of the Mansion at its original location in Scotland.

The approach to the Luthor Mansion is along a tree-lined private road.

The surrounding lawns are large enough to land Lionel Luthor's helicopter, allowing for quick flights to Metropolis and elsewhere. The grounds include exquisite sculpture gardens, a swimming pool, and a Greenhouse.
edit Interior

The main building in the Luthor Mansion is 200 feet long and 86 feet wide with an 82-foot high turret.

The Luthor ancestral home boasts a library, an armory with medieval weaponry, an exercise room, several servants quarters, a wine cellar and a grand ballroom. Inside, the mansion is adorned with priceless art pieces and ancient artifacts collected from around the world. Many of the rooms have oak and rosewood panels on the walls and teak floors, along with antiques and tapestries.

Inside Lex Luthor's spacious office, there is a desk, a fireplace with surrounding furniture, and a pool table, which has often been replaced by a piano. The office also contains stained glass windows illuminating the family crest. The office is known for its many entrances and a mezzanine level over the main entrance. One security feature to the mansion is the panic room behind the bookcase which has views of the whole mansion.

A locked room in the mansion housed Lex's "obsession": computer screens with a rotating CGI image of the octagonal key, the wall paintings from the underground cave, Roger Nixon's computer simulation of Lex's car hitting Clark Kent on the bridge, a large picture of Clark's face, an enlarged copy of Clark's family tree that he filled with Kryptonian symbols.
edit Filming Locations

The exterior shots are of Hatley Castle, in the Hatley Park National Historic Site, which is in Colwood, British Columbia. The interiors are filmed on a set. The castle is also known to fans of another superhero series; the X-Men films were partially filmed at Hatley Castle when it was used as the setting for Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.

PostSubject: Kent Farm   Sun Aug 02, 2009 4:09 pm

"This farm has been in your family for three generations-- four, counting Clark." -- Martha Kent

The Kent Farm is the estate of the Kent family and currently belongs to Clark Kent. Martha Kent, widow of Jonathan Kent, formerly ran the farm until she left Smallville in 2007.

Since Jonathan's death in January of 2006 and Martha's succession of his State Senate seat, their 21-year-old son Clark has run the farm almost single-handedly. The farm is still actively raising animals and producing organic crops.[1]

The Kent Farm is located on Hickory Lane in Smallville, Kansas. [2] It is the oldest farm in Lowell County.[3] It is adjacent to the Smallville cemetery. [4] The home phone number is 555-0145. [citation needed]

edit Known owners

Well at first Hiram Kent and his wife owned the Kent farm. Many years later Jonathan and Martha took the responsibility of taking care of the Kent farm; this was after the death of Hiram and Jessica.
edit Current Inhabitants

In May of 2007, Martha left Smallville and moved to Washington, D.C., to take a seat in the US Senate. For a short time, Clark was the farm's only inhabitant. However, shortly after Martha's departure, Clark's Kryptonian cousin Kara was released from suspended animation and moved in with Clark.

In addition, Lana Lang sought refuge at the farm after faking her death. She lived with Clark as the two attempted to have a "normal" relationship. While she was suffering from a strange Kryptonian catatonia, she was relocated to the hospital for care. After her recovery, she left Clark and Smallville for the foreseeable future. At the same time, Kara's whereabouts were unknown, so Clark once again lived alone for a time. Kara returned to the farm, but Clark soon realized that she was Brainiac in disguise, with the real Kara trapped in the Phantom Zone.

In the summer of 2008, Clark was trapped in the collapsing Fortress of Solitude, then held captive in a Russian work camp, so for a time, the Kent farm was uninhabited. Clark has since returned and once again lives alone on the farm, with just Shelby. It is unclear who took care of Shelby during Clark's absence.

Clark invited Lois to live with him on the farm in her "old room", but she turned him down. Later she took him up on the offer, but changed her mind after getting a raise at work.
edit History

This parcel of land was settled by Nathaniel Kent, son of Silas and Abigail Kent, for his family back in 1871. Nathaniel and his wife, Mary Glenowen, created an original two-room farmhouse out of logs from walnut trees Nathaniel cleared on the land. The living area consisted of a large room with a fireplace/stove for heating and cooking and a table with benches where members of the family ate their meals. A small room housed the sleeping quarters. Nathaniel served as one of Smallville's first sheriffs. With the success of the fertile land and the expanding size of the family came a bigger house built in 1903, a distance away from the original homestead and closer to the new dirt road that leads to town. Constructed out of wooden boards, the new home contained a large kitchen with dining area, a living area and two bedrooms-- one for the parents and the other for all of the children. An indoor commode and two more rooms were added in 1938, and in 1957 a second story was built. Shortly after marrying Martha, Jonathan constructed a wraparound porch, painted the house yellow and surrounded the home with a white picket fence for his new bride. The couple gutted and completely renovated the residence over the past several years. During the second meteor shower, the house was severely damaged, but has since been rebuilt. The furnishings include a very interesting antique upright piano, although none of the current family have ever been seen to play it.

Rich in history, the Kent Farm has survived the 1930s Dust Bowl, tornadoes and snowstorms as well as the great meteor shower. The original barn was built in 1872 and housed many different farm animals but was destroyed by the Irving Tornado of 1879. Another barn was immediately erected but was struck by lightning in 1926 and burned to the ground. Its replacement--built in 1926-- was converted to a stable 30 years ago and now stands adjacent to the large barn--with a loft-- constructed in 1970. The first wooden chicken coop was assembled in the early 1900s.

Hiram Kent, Jonathan's father, built a storm cellar during the 1950s to protect his family from the many tornadoes that plague the state and some say to provide shelter from the threat of nuclear war. The storm cellar was destroyed in May 2003. The Kent Farm also has a concrete and steel grain silo and a steel windmill.
edit Produce
The Dairy
Over the years, the Kent farm has grown alfalfa, corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, milo, grain sorghum, potatoes and sugar beets. At one time, the Kent farm was known as the major cattle-feeder in the area. The family has also raised dairy cows, sheep, goats, pigs, workhorses and chickens.

During her married life, Martha Kent, a "city girl" from Metropolis, helped her husband farm their land and raise their animals. She particularly enjoys taking care of the chickens. Martha began growing her own organic produce several years ago by researching organic gardening and recognizing her own need to grow produce without pesticides. She plants her plot near the house using only organic seeds and in complete accordance with the organic produce guidelines. Over the years, her interest in organic gardening grew into a thriving business. She produces tomatoes, squash, berries, herbs, wheat and flowers. She also has a small apple orchard. Mrs. Kent sells her produce at the Farmers' Market. She has also transformed the chicken coop and removed all cages. The chickens run freely in the buildings when they are not outside clucking in the yard.

When the Talon Theatre was converted into a coffee shop by Lana Lang, Martha produced pies and other pastries to be sold there.
edit Recent Years

In 2001, Martha Kent was chased into a grain silo by Harry Volk. They were covered in grain, but rescued by Clark and Jonathan. (Hourglass)
The Kent's herd of cattle dies in 2002.

The Kent's entire herd of cattle was poisoned with chemicals seemingly from LuthorCorp's fertilizer plant but in reality, it was Roy Rothman, brother of Amanda Rothman, in order to take revenge against Lex. (Zero)

The Kent Farm was quarantined and searched in early 2003 when Martha contracted a deadly toxin of unknown origin. (Fever)

An explosion in the storm cellar occurred in the Spring of 2003 and caused a powerful power surge throughout the town. (Exodus)

When the Kents were unable to recover from financial problems, the farm was leveraged and they almost had to move out. However, Lex Luthor bought the land in the Kents' name, paid their debts, and gave them the deed. (Phoenix)
The Kent House is hit by a meteor in 2005.

The farm house was severely damaged in 2005 when it suffered a direct hit during the second meteor shower. However, it was rebuilt with help from the citizens of Smallville. (Commencement)

In 2006, Martha Kent arranged for Lionel Luthor to contribute a significant amount of money to Jonathan Kent's campaign for State Senate. When Jonathan found out, he offered Lionel a sizable portion of the farm land known as the "Back Forty" (Acres) as collateral to pay their debt. After Jonathan's sudden death, Lionel, for his part, refused to accept Jonathan's payment. He absolved their debt and gave the land back to the Kents. (Lockdown, Vengeance)

When Martha left the farm and moved to Washington, D.C., Clark mentioned that he would lease out the Back Forty to a neighboring farmer, Ben Hubbard. He also intended for Ben to look after the farm when he planned to begin his training in the Fortress of Solitude but has since changed his mind about going. (Prototype, Kara)
Lana Lang stands in the destroyed Kent barn after Chloe's disasterous wedding in Legion.

Clark allowed a feature-film version of the Warrior Angel comic book to be filmed at the farm. The film featured popular movie star Rachel Davenport and the farm was overrun with paparazzi during her stay. (Action)

In late 2008, Clark and Lois hosted Chloe and Jimmy's wedding at the Kent Farm. Doomsday attacked the wedding and kidnapped Chloe. Davis did heavy damage to the barn before he left (Bride). In the episode Legion, Clark had repaired the barn.
edit Known Inhabitants

The Kent Family, including Shelby and Kara.

For a short time, Lana Lang lived with Clark on the Kent farm.

For a very brief period of time, Lex Luthor stayed with the Kents (Prodigal).

Lois Lane at one point or another lived with the Kents for a while before she eventually moved out.

PostSubject: Phantom Zone   Sun Aug 02, 2009 6:39 pm

Picture an alien Alcatraz." – Chloe Sullivan, to Oliver Queen, Bloodline

The Phantom Zone is an alternate dimension discovered by the Kryptonian scientist Jor-El.

Before Krypton's destruction, many of the worst criminals from the 28 known galaxies were imprisoned in the Phantom Zone. In many cases, these criminals were mass murderers on a grand scale, such as Gloria, with the most horrific offenders stripped of their physical bodies and flung into the Zone as non-corporeal phantoms, such as General Zod. Many of the prisoners exiled to the Zone were captured by the Martian Manhunter when he worked as a bounty hunter for Jor-El.

The Phantom Zone is a desert-like wasteland where the sun never sets, casting an eternal blue-gray light. No indigenous forms of life have been shown, either animal or plant, but the Zone is nonetheless a very dangerous place. Phantoms roam freely, able to attack at will, and the inhabitants are violent and angry. According to Raya, time has no meaning there, and anyone exiled to the Zone does not age.

edit Phantoms

Resembling wraiths, the bodiless phantoms roam the Phantom Zone at will, attacking with little warning. Though primarily insubstantial, they are able to cut, and even grab, their victims. (Zod) Only Raya's Crystal of El was able to drive them away. Not all prisoners of the Phantom Zone are wraiths, but they are the most dangerous.

Outside of the Zone, they have not been shown to have any substance; however, they are able to possess a host at will. Once they do so, the host body gains any abilities the phantom may have had in its original form. However, these powers vanish once a phantom leaves, or is forced out, of the individual they are possessing. (Zod, Fallout, Bloodline)

Phantoms can be forcibly removed from a host using a Crystal of El or a similar device, such as the Martian Crystal.
edit Entrances
[edit] The Black Crystal
The black crystal opens the portal for the phantom zone

When Brainiac arrived on Earth, his mission was to release Zod, using Clark as his vessel. He attempted to do this by using the black crystal in the Fortress to open a Phantom Zone portal. This can be used as an exit and an entrance, as Clark tried to use it to send Davis to the Phantom Zone. (Solitude, Beast)
[edit] Phantom Zone Bracelets
A portal to the Phantom Zone, created by Aethyr's bracelet, opens.

Phantom Zone bracelets originate from Krypton, where Jor-El created the Phantom Zone. The bracelets have been shown to be in the possession of the Disciples of Zod. They open portals which violently suck their victim inside. Once trapped, the portal closes, becoming a thin pane of square crystal which quickly races into space. (Arrival, Vessel).
The Disciples of Zod trapped in the Phantom Zone.

From the outside, it seems as if person trapped is somehow stuck within the crystal pane; however, from the inside, these constructs are more like a transparent room from which the person sealed inside can observe the outside world.

Once in space, the 'floor' of this construct drops, and the prisoner inside falls through a tunnel, eventually landing in the true Phantom Zone. Once there, any superpowers that the prisoner may have had are nullified, and the being is rendered mortal.
[edit] The Crystal of Knowledge

The Crystal of Knowledge was also somehow reprogrammed to send Clark Kent into the Phantom Zone. Lois was touching Clark at the time, which resulted in both of them being imprisoned. (Bloodline)
edit Exits

On two occasions, Brainiac was able to use the Fortress of Solitude to generate a portal to the Phantom Zone. In Brainiac's first attempt, the wraith form of General Zod was almost able to emerge through this, sealed in the crystal square, before Clark Kent prevented it. Brainiac's second attempt was successful, and Zod was able to possess the body of Lex Luthor. It is not known if this portal could also have been used to exile someone to the Zone, or if the Fortress itself has such a capability.

Chloe Sullivan was able to use her Brainiac abilities to re-program the Crystal of Knowledge to open an exit from the Phantom Zone for Kara and Clark while the crystal was powered by a frequency generator that Chloe had Oliver Queen steal from Tess Mercer.

The second way to escape the Zone is from the inside. Jor-El designed a secret 'backdoor' gateway out of the Zone, should he or his family ever be exiled there. Only a member of the House of El can operate it. This gateway transports the person activating it from the Zone to wherever they wish, but will also draw in any nearby people or phantoms. Both Kara and Clark caused phantoms to escape when they opened the portal on seperate occassions. Those transported appear on Earth in a flash of light. When Clark escaped the exit appeared high in the sky so he and the other escaped zoners fell to the ground in a burst of energy that created craters wherever they landed.
edit Prisoners

"Zoners?"
"'Escaped Super-criminals from the Phantom Zone' is a little bit of a mouthful." – Chloe Sullivan to Clark Kent, Reunion

Clark is imprisoned in the Phantom Zone by General Zod.
Clark and several Zoners escape the Phantom Zone, and scatter to different areas around Earth.

Zoners, a term coined by Chloe Sullivan, designates the escaped prisoners and phantoms of the Phantom Zone. When Clark Kent used the gateway to escape, it seems that many have followed him back to the planet Earth.

Some Zoners are phantoms that can possess the bodies of humans, like Baern and General Zod did. They can be sent back to the Zone directly with the Crystal of El, as Clark did to with Zod and Baern, without killing the host.

On the other hand, others were never phantoms and retained their original forms, like Aldar, Gloria and Titan. Neither of them could be returned to the Zone with the Crystal of El, and had to be killed because there was no Phantom Zone bracelet around to trap them with. Within a corporeal form, they demonstrate their powers.

At least four of the escaped Zoners, including Zod, have been shown to bypass or negate Kryptonian physical invulnerability to some extent (and it is imaginable that the Zone holds even more powerful entities). This feat may be related to their imprisonment in the Zone, or that since they are not from Earth and are so physically powerful themselves, they can inflict sharp and blunt force trauma on Kryptonian flesh. This has precedent in the comics such as when Doomsday killed Superman in Superman #75 (January 1993).
[edit] General Zod
Zod is forced out of Lex's body by the Crystal of El.

General Zod attempted to take over the planet Krypton with the help of the Brain InterActive Construct. He was opposed by the scientist Jor-El of the House of El. Ultimately, Zod's quest for dominion led to Krypton's destruction, as well as the deaths of its people, with the exception of a few survivors, including Kal-El, Kara, and Raya.

Before Krypton perished, Zod's physical body was destroyed, while his mind and spirit were placed in the Phantom Zone by Jor-El; the only way Zod could escape his imprisonment was if he found another body to inhabit.
[edit] Gloria
Gloria.

Gloria was an alien being who had control over plant life and super strength. Originating from a plant world, she was imprisoned in the Phantom Zone for overtaking other planets with her vegetation until she was inadvertently released by Clark Kent.

Posing as a beautiful park ranger, Gloria used her powers to store her seeds in human males, luring men into the woods and killing their girlfriends. Gloria used Jimmy Olsen as one of her suitors and attacked Clark with her powers. When she went to find a suitor at the charity ball at the Luthor Mansion, she was stopped by Clark, who electrocuted her with a lamp and vaporized her, ending her threat once and for all.
[edit] Baern
Baern.

Baern is an escaped alien criminal from the Phantom Zone with the power to project energy that can vaporize a person in an instant. He also possessed super speed and super strength. Baern destroyed his own civilization as well as a few Kryptonians before being turned into a phantom and exiled to the Zone by Jor-El. He tracked Kal-El to Smallville; in the ensuing battle between him and Kal-El in the Fortress of Solitude, Raya was killed.

PostSubject: Phantom Zone cont.   Sun Aug 02, 2009 6:40 pm

The Disciples of Zod were foot soldiers who served General Zod. They were warriors who were well-experienced with their Kryptonian powers on Earth.

The first set of disciples sent to Earth were Aethyr and Nam-Ek, who arrived on Earth during the second meteor shower. They were sent by their master to look for Kal-El, and terrorized Smallville in search of him. After a protracted struggling in which the Disciples tried to imprison Clark Kent in the Zone, Clark managed to turn the tables and imprison them. Later, when Clark was sent into the Zone by Zod, Nam-Ek was killed by Raya.
[edit] Aldar
Aldar.

Aldar was an enormous alien humanoid who fed on human skeletons. Clark Kent tried to capture him with the Crystal of El, but since Aldar was never a phantom, the attempt failed. He possessed vast amounts of super strength, and was stronger than even Clark, easily defeating the Kryptonian in combat, although he was subsequently vanquished by the Martian Manhunter.
[edit] Dr. Hudson
Dr. Hudson.

Dr. Hudson is a Zoner who has the power of mind control. He telepathically entered Clark Kent's mind and created an illusion where Clark's powers were simply a figment of his overactive imagination. He was aware of every single memory within Clark's mind and therefore was able to optimize the alternate reality which he had created to try and trick Clark into giving up his powers, with only the intervention of the Martian Manhunter and the sound of Shelby's barking managing to convince Clark that he was in an illusion. The Martian Manhunter used the Martian Crystal, a device very similar to the Crystal of El, to remove Dr. Hudson from Clark's mind and imprison him in the Phantom Zone once again.
[edit] Titan
Titan.

Titan was a powerful humanoid alien formerly trapped in the Phantom Zone, escaping when Clark Kent left the Zone. Unlike most other Zoners, he still possessed his body. Titan was a fighter and lived to fight; a Kryptonian tattoo on his right arm underlined that his race seemed to embrace the way of the warrior. Titan was fighting meteor freaks at a club until he could fight a Kryptonian: Clark. Titan was killed in combat.
[edit] Bizarro
Bizarro as a phantom.
Bizarro after cloning Clark.

Bizarro was the last, and probably most dangerous, Zoner released from the Phantom Zone. He was accidentally created in a laboratory on the planet Krypton. The Martian Manhunter helped Jor-El send Bizarro to the Zone as a wraith.

After battling Clark Kent at Reeves Dam, taking a piece of Clark's DNA to create his own body, and being defeated, the Martian Manhunter placed him on the sunny side of Mars, leaving Bizarro trapped because of his weakness to sunlight from the yellow sun. After Zor-El caused an eclipse that covered the galaxy, Bizarro returned; upon learning that Clark was missing, he took over his life. When he realized he had to confront his weakness, Bizarro found Brainiac, who tricked him to find his creator so he could fix himself. Clark eventually confronted Bizarro with blue kryptonite, which Lana Lang used against him.
[edit] Raya
Raya.

Raya was an assistant of Jor-El, who sent her into the Phantom Zone armed with a Crystal of El to ward off the phantoms shortly before Krypton's destruction. When Clark was banished to the Zone by General Zod, Raya helped him escape, giving him the crystal to help him to stop Zod.

Later, Clark discovered that Raya had come to Earth, at which point they battled Baern; Raya was killed during the final fight with the escaped phantom.
[edit] Kara
Kara in the Phantom Zone.

Kara was sent to the Phantom Zone by Brainiac after they traveled back in time to Krypton in the year 1986 prior to the planet's destruction so that Brainiac could kill baby Kal-El so he couldn't grow up and become Clark Kent. After Kara tried to stop Brainiac on Krypton, he placed her in the Zone at some point after she returned to the present day. When Clark and Lois Lane were transported to the Phantom Zone, Kara attacked them, believing them to be shapeshifting Zoners, but realized it was them and helped them escape using a second escape route built by Zor-El. She helped Lois escape first and unsuccessfully tried to stop Faora from following, resulting in Zod's wife inhabiting Lois' body.

Kara was only able to escape the Phantom Zone when Chloe Sullivan reversed the programming of the Crystal of Knowledge to bring Clark home. Clark then held on to Kara to drag her through with him.
Kara fights Faora.
[edit] Faora

Faora was the wife of General Zod, and was imprisoned with him in the Phantom Zone and stripped of her body. She managed to escape the Zone with Lois Lane despite Kara's efforts to fight her away from it. Upon arriving on Earth, Faora inhabited Lois' body, but was eventually captured by Kara using the Martian Manhunter's Martian crystal.
Lois and Clark trapped in the Phantom Zone.
[edit] Lois Lane

Lois Lane is the first known human prisoner of the Phantom Zone. She was transported there when Clark Kent received the Crystal of Knowledge, which was reprogrammed to send him to the Zone. Lois was knocked out by Kara, but eventually awoke and was freed by Kara using Zor-El's portal. Her time in the Phantom Zone led to her being possessed by Faora, yet Lois has no memory of the incident as she thinks it was all a dream.

The Phantom Zone in the comics

In the comics The Phantom Zone is an interdimensional realm outside the normal space/time continuum. It is a barren and insubstantial null area absent of any physical material. There is only one native denizen to the Phantom Zone, the enigmatic and powerful entity known as the Aethyr. All cause and effect that occurs within the zone does so at Aethyr's capricious whim. Persons who travel into the negative zone are no longer corporeal and exist only as psychic phantasms of their true selves. Though their minds and personalities remain intact, they can no longer physically interact with any other being. This include direct physical contact as well as the power of speech. Communication within the phantom zone is done so by telepathy. As the Phantom Zone exists outside of space/time, those within it are no longer subject to the rigors of age, rendering them effectively immortal.
The Phantom Zone
Many years ago, the penal system of the planet Krypton sentenced their criminals by placing them in suspended animation. The Kryptonian scientist Jor-El discovered the existence of the Phantom Zone and introduced it as an alternative means of imprisonment. He had little knowledge of the true inner workings of the zone, but believed that it was a more humane form of punishment over that which they had previously employed. He developed a projection device that could send and retrieve people into the zone with the simple flick of a switch. The first prisoner to be exiled to the Phantom Zone was the renegade scientist Jax-Ur. Jax-Ur, a former colleague of Jor-El's, was responsible for the destruction of Krypton's moon Wegthor and the deaths of over five-hundred lunar colonists. Over a short expanse of time, the Kryptonian Science Council began exiling the worst of the planet's criminals into the zone, the most famous of which was the military insurrectionist General Zod.

When Jor-El later discovered that Krypton was going to explode due to geological instability, he proposed bringing the entire population of Krypton into the zone. Jor-El never had the opportunity or approval to conduct such a plan, and ultimately everyone living on the planet Krypton died when it exploded.

Those within the Phantom Zone survived however. It was years before they ever learned the truth about their home-world's destruction. Several of the exiled criminals, now led by General Zod, found a means of escaping the zone and eventually came to Earth where they battled the "Last Son" of Krypton, Jor-El's son Kal-El.
